About
‘Who are the People in our Neighborhood?’ is a project with the goal to create 6 portraits of people who are long standing residents of the Old North End. The residents whose portraits will be created are people whose contributions are known in the ONE, but may be small and mighty, and/or less visible. This project seeks to celebrate those who are known for their contributions and to uplift the less known people who contribute to the fabric of our community.
Utilizing a similar strategy of the ongoing project of the artist, “What Happens Outside of the Kitchen”, (https://creatingresistance.weebly.com/what-happens-outside-of-the-kitchen.html) (a series of portraits and short biographies of women who have been influential to the artist), jen proposes to use a similar style, portrait and short bio, to highlight these community members.
Each bio will share something about the artist that is true to them, versus what the community’s identity of them may be.
The subjects will be chosen both by the artist and through a nomination process. The artist will choose 2-3 subjects to begin the process while the nomination and community input processes are occurring.
There will be a nomination and community input process developed, and implemented. A list of qualifications will be developed and anyone is welcome to make a nomination based on the qualifications. The nomination process will close once there is 10+ nominations or the timeframe has closed, whichever comes first.
Whichever nominations match the qualifications most clearly will be chosen to have a portrait included in this project.
By April 2020, all subjects will be chosen, portraits will be rendered and bios made.
Portraits will be painted between April-July 2020.
Project Goals:
We are living in a time of rapid change, both in the demographics and landscape of our community. While we look forward into the future, it is imperative that we keep the stories of the past alive. These stories hold the roots of our collective history and need to be a part of shaping our future. This project will both preserve some of the stories and share them widely, but also hopes to inspire others to create opportunities to tell and preserve stories that have shaped our community.
